Conjunctival tissue cauterises.
Corneal epithelium sloughs
Corneal stroma edema and opacifies
Endothelial cells dies
Angle structure scars results in increase IOP
Cataracts forms as a result of insults to the lens.
Exposure to weak acid and alkali - injection, chemosis, mild corneal clouding and edema with minimal visible inflammation.
Severe acid burns - cornea and conjunctiva rapidly turn white and opaque. Nitric and chromic acids turn tissue yellow-brown.
Most severe acid burns produce corneal anaesthesia, limbal pallor and uveitis. Severe alkali burns can result in corneal melting and perforation within 2 to 4 weeks.
